Are Precious Metals a Good Investment?

If you’ve ever seen gold prices in the news or heard someone say, “invest in silver,” you might have wondered: Are precious metals actually a good investment? For most students, thinking about investing in gold or silver probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. It’s easier to imagine buying shares of a tech company than holding a bar of gold. However, in a time of rising prices and uncertain job markets, some students question whether investing in precious metals is a smart way to protect their money.

Why People Invest in Precious Metals

Unlike stocks or crypto, metals like gold and silver are physical assets. They don’t depend on a company’s performance or speculation. According to the Vancouver Bullion & Currency Exchange Market Watch (2024), interest in gold has surged recently as more people look for “stability and security in an unpredictable economy.” For students trying to learn the basics of investing, the idea of stability is key.

VBCE notes that businesses worldwide have turned to gold and silver not just for tradition, but also because these metals retain their value over time and often rise when other markets decline (VBCE MarketWatch, 2024). That same mindset can apply to students. Owning a small amount of gold, even indirectly through an exchange-traded fund (ETF), can be a smart way to diversify your investments, even when starting with a few hundred dollars.

How Precious Metals Fit in a Student Portfolio

For most university students, precious metals shouldn’t be their first investment. A Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) with a simple ETF or index fund is usually a better starting point. However, adding a small amount of precious metals through a fund that tracks gold or silver can make sense once you’ve built up some savings. Metals hedge against inflation and currency fluctuations, thereby protecting the real value of your money over time.

The Bottom Line

Precious metals, while relatively stable, don’t always deliver rapid growth. Their prices can still fluctuate, and they don’t generate dividends or interest. For student investors, this means gold and silver can provide stability within a portfolio, but they shouldn’t entirely replace other investments. Instead, they’re best viewed as a safety net rather than a primary source of returns.
